I've had the lines thaw and sap start running before I was able to get out and turn the pumps on. I have a storage tote settin over them to protect from rain/snow. Even when I get out to shut them al off, they sit out all season and have yet to have any damage from freezing. I have inadvertently let a pump run all night at under 25F, with no damage. The pump generates and maintains a small amount of heat from it's electric motor and friction. The strainers also catch whose wood chips from the tap holes. Any sap in the pump will be pumped out before it freezes and damages the diaphragms.

As the temp drops and the sap begins to freeze, the screen stops any ice from coming into the pump. Screen strainers- I run the Shurflo strainer screens between the manifold and the pump and between the mainline and pump on those two setups. There are several threads in the forum sharing this tid bit hat has saved me a tremendous amount of time in the last few years. I can swap it back out to the woods the next morning in just a minute. I use a pump in the sugarhouse to pump water through a tankless propane water heater in the sink from my permeate tank. They are great for putting the pumps on and taking off. To reply to MISugarDaddy, I second the cam locks.

Some people have their pumps in heated enclosures, but we chose to keep things as simple as possible and just remove the pumps when the temperature is going to be below freezing. When the pumps are not in place, the sap flows by gravity into separate tanks.

It is very easy because we have them connected with cam-lock fittings. PS: We do bring in the pumps at night to prevent them from freezing.

Although last season was shorter than normal, we used less than 30# of propane for each generator and didn't have to bring in the batteries the entire season. Last year, at the suggestion of a fellow Trader, we purchased two 900 watt propane generators that we use to run battery chargers connected to the batteries. Until last year, that required collecting the batteries daily and recharging them at night for the next day. All our pumps are 12 volt and connected to deep cycle batteries. All our pumps are located below the mainline they are connected to and pump sap up then into holding tanks. We have not done this because we have enough liquid supplied by the mainline connections to maintain constant vacuum. Some people have connected recirculation lines to their pumps to help maintain higher vacuum. They definitely generate more vacuum if there is liquid supplied to them continuously. We actually have 4 of them on separate mainlines with anywhere from 70 to over 100 taps connected to each mainline. if you do make up a cable yourself use a proper 12v to 12v adaptor (available from thios site) which will give a contact 12vwhen the water pump starts up and keep it 12v even if the battery drops below this.Shurflo is the most commonly used RV pump based on comments on this forum. Some tellies will go off after the voltage drops below 12v or turn off it someone starts the water pump up nd its a right pain.

Make sure the tv can run off 12v directly as you dont want to waste power running it through an inverter or even running it through the 230v to 12v adaprot that comes with a lot of TVs (rather like a laptop adaptor as not only is this also a waste of power (during the conversion) but these tellies dont like you just making up a 12v cable and plugging this into your battery. If your Tv is on a swivel bracket you can compensate for this of course. Some Tvs have a very narrow angle and if your TV is say on a worktop and you are lying on a bed or long seat rslaxing and below the centre of the screen too much the picture will look dark. This means if you are sitting square on at the screen then lower your head slowly and see if the picture changes. As above but when buying the TV check the viewing angle.
